About

United Nations Association St Andrews (UNAStA) is a student organisation at the University of St Andrews. We are a sub-branch of UN House Scotland and UNA Scotland, which are non-profits that act as a go-between for Scotland, Scottish Parliament, and the UN. By extension, we are therefore a sub-branch of UNA-UK, which is directly affiliation with the United Nations through its consultative status (with the UN).

Activities

Within UNA, we have several key departments: Journalism, Podcast, POP (Parliamentary One-Pager), Events and Fundraising. The Journalism team writes long-form articles on international affairs for our partner publications in St Andrews. The Podcast team creates both and longer episodes focusing on a theme, such as 'Forced Migration and Intersectionality'. The Parliamentary One-Pager team research and write one-page briefings for Scottish MSPs, lobbying them on bills that are going through Parliament. The Events team organise formal, speaker events; the Fundraising team organise fun events aimed as raising money for charities and the society as we are a non-profit. These include sports games, bake sales, and pub quizzes.

This year, the UNA St Andrews have established multiple teams of:

POP, Events, Fundraising, Podcast, Journalism. We also have the roles of Secretary and Treasurer.

We have:

  • Published several podcast episodes

  • Arranged multiple fundraisings

  • Increased our membership

  • Secured sponsorship with local businesses in St Andrews

  • Written multiple journalistic pieces

  • Had a successful Photojournalism competition and exhibition where multi-award-winning photographer David Cruickshanks attended.

  • Started planning for the next POP

At the moment we are planning a Christmas fundraiser, more podcast episodes, journalism pieces and will finish the POP by the end of the semester.
